MOUNT JULIET, Tenn. — The video store was supposed to be dead, and the streaming platform was supposed to have killed it. This week, in a strip of Lebanon Road twenty minutes east of Nashville, the two shook hands.
Danger Zone Video, a buy-sell-trade physical media shop that opened in 2022 and has since become Middle Tennessee's home for VHS, laserdisc, and 4K collectors, has become the first retail location in the country to stock Screamify's Micro Horror coins — individually numbered, American-made collectibles that carry an entire streaming series in a QR code on their reverse.

The object itself rewards attention. Series artwork fronts each coin; the back holds the code and the edition number. Scanned with a phone, it plays that series — vertically shot, episodic horror built for the pocket screen. Should the link expire, rescanning the coin resumes playback. The disc in your hand, not an account, is the persistent thing.
The launch slate maps the young format's range. Autonomous, produced by Erin Áine and Kyle Valle of Big Squid Productions and starring Áine opposite Domenic Jungling, was shot inside a functioning driverless vehicle and wrings its dread from technology that is already on public roads. Scary Mary, from TikTok filmmaker Joshua Alden and Brandi Alden, turns influencer culture's hunger for virality into an invocation ritual. Game Night, from Trent Duncan of Venture Court Productions, plays the traditionalist: scouts, woods, masked killer.
There is a coherent theory of media in all of this. The independent video store survived the last decade by selling what streaming could not: objecthood, scarcity, the ritual of the shelf. A numbered coin that unlocks a stream is a small, canny synthesis — the licensing economics of digital distribution wearing the body of physical media. Whether it is a novelty or the start of a genuine retail channel for streaming-native content will depend on whether other shops follow Danger Zone's lead.
For now, the experiment has one address: 11932 Lebanon Road, Mount Juliet, Wednesday through Sunday.
